End-of-summer grilling: Here's where you can find locally-made brats in Southeast Wisconsin (2024)

With summer ending in less than a month and a half, there is still time to throw some good brats and sausages on the grill. This is not an exhaustive list, but here are some Milwaukee area butcher shops and delis where you can find locally-made brats.

Sausage Haus Meat & Deli - Oconomowoc

About: According to its website, The Sausage Haus Meat & Deli is owned by Al and Lana Jerabek. A GMToday article said the shop has been in Oconomowoc for more than 30 years.

Address: 523 N. Oakwood Ave., Oconomowoc

Hours: Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Held's Meat Market - Slinger

About: Held's Meat Market was opened by Adam Held in 1886 and has been passed down through four generations, according to its website. Held's occupied four locations before the current building was opened in 1995.

Address: 480 Kettle Moraine Drive North, Slinger

Hours: Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Held's Meat Market is closed on Sundays and major holidays.

House of Home Made Sausage - Germantown

About: The House of Home Made Sausage has been operating since 1939, although the store has moved locations over the years. It is a fourth generation family-owned butcher shop, according to its website.

Hours: Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Note: The shop is temporarily closed but is scheduled to reopen Aug. 22 at 10 a.m., according to the business' voicemail.

West Bend Sausage Plus - West Bend

About: West Bend Sausage Plus boasts a variety of meats and cuts that have won awards from the Wisconsin Specialty Meat Championships and American Cured Meat Championships for at least the past three years. It also smokes shanks, knuckles, and pig ears for dog owners to bring home for their furry friends, according to its website.

Hours: Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Schwai's Meat & Sausage - Fredonia

About: Schwai's Meat & Sausage is run by Tom Schwai. Its Facebook page shows the business participating in local events such as Strawberry Fest and the Wine & Harvest Fest in Cedarburg, and the West Bend Farmers Market.

Hours: Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. through 3 p.m.

Karl's Country Market - Menomonee Falls

About: Karl's Country Market has been in business since 1965, according to its website. The site also says the store has won over 150 international, national and state awards for its European-style sausages over the past 30 years.

Becher Meats - West Allis

About: Along with regular butcher services, Becher Meats includes take-home meals, according to its website. Some of those options are homemade pizzas, garlic bread, pasties and pot pies. The store provides products for its sister shop across the street, the West Allis Cheese & Sausage Shoppe.

Hours: Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

South Milwaukee Sausage & Meats - South Milwaukee

About: South Milwaukee Sausage & Meats, also known as SMx2, opened in 2020 after a group of friends teamed up and became co-owners of the store. Since then, they've been making their small-batch products. Lead butcher, Michael "Doc" Donnell has been in the industry for almost 20 years, according to the store's website.

Address: 1200 Milwaukee Ave., South Milwaukee

Hours: Wednesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Butcher Block Meat Market, LLC - Oak Creek

About: Butcher Block Meat Market was opened in 1981. Along with the standard meats, Butcher Block Meat Market also offers seafood, fish smoking, wild game processing and catering, according to its website.

Address: 9340 S. Chicago Road, Oak Creek

Hours: Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The market is closed on all major holidays.
