Thanks Illinois IAAI. Just spent a few days with over 120 fire investigators in Peoria, Illinois for the IAAI chapter. We went over "Unique Fire Death" investigations. All case histories were based on recent cases from my files and from the book co-authored by Joe Konefal "Fire Death Scene Investigation". The chapter provided each attendee with a copy. Thanks to Chris Ward, President Tim Morris, and Rob Helmkamp for the fantastic hospitality. Next stop for this class is with the Virginia IAAI chapter in about 3 weeks.

New York Times #1 Best Selling novelist Lee Goldberg has just released the latest tale in his new series about arson investigators from the Los Angeles Sheriff's Departments Arson/Explosives Detail. The novel "Ashes Never Lie" is his latest work following the exploits of his investigators Sharpe and Walker as they tackle all manner of arson events in Los Angeles County. Goldberg has been an award-winning fiction writer for decades on television (Monk, Diagnosis Murder, etc) as well as several series of fiction books. In this latest series Goldberg writes that he "was inspired by the cases investigated by Ed Nordskog, a highly respected former Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department arson and explosives detective". Goldberg relies heavily on all of my published books, as well as those co-authored by Joe Konefal. It's nice to see someone using real case work to add a sense of authenticity to their works of fiction. I'm glad the arson biz is getting some exposure. Pick up the first two stories in the series for entertaining reading.

Many thanks for this Mike...That looks like a well-used or beat up copy...I keep getting sent photos of the book as it appears in odd places.......here's one from a defense attorney's office. In this photo my book is sitting next to arson/fire books from Dehaan/Icove, and Lentini...not bad company to be next to....This particular book of mine has been cited in academic papers and courtrooms (by people other than me) on at least 60 occasions that I am aware of...

EOW Detective Alex Miller Los Angeles Sheriff's Arson/Bomb SquadIf you have read any of my books, I make mention in a few cases of a young guy named "Angry Alex". I affectionately gave him that name after working with him as a partner for two years. On May 1st, 2024, Alex died after a brief battle with cancer. Alex was an active member of the L.A. Sheriff's Arson/Bomb/SWAT unit since 2013. Alex was one of the people I trained in that unit, and we worked on and off with each other until my retirement in 2019.Alex was a relatively young member of the unit and was physically fit and active until his diagnosis a couple months ago. He was known to be highly intelligent, a critical thinker, and in possession of a can-do work attitude. He was selected early in his bomb/arson career to be a member of the elite Nuclear Stabilization Team (those in the biz will know what that is). He was also active in training other bomb techs in SWAT/Bomb techniques. The attached photos show Alex receiving a special commendation from the US Attorney's Office, investigating an arson/murder scene (in black uniform on left), and starting "the long walk" down range (in bomb suit) on a combined Tactical/Bomb mission.Still a relatively young man at death in his mid-40's Alex leaves behind a family with two teenaged children. You will be missed, brother.

Practical Arson/Bomb TrainingThe attached photos are from a recent CA State POST Arson-Explosives school, which has been presented 3-4 times per year for the past 15 years. Pictured are legendary creators/instructors Mike Digby and Joe Konefal. The 40-hour course introduces police detectives and fire investigators to the world of arson and explosives as related to criminal prosecutions. Training includes motive analysis, fire dynamics, blast injuries, post blast reconstruction, incendiary devices, and other related hazards of BHO lab fires/explosions, HME labs, and linking these cases together via evidence exploitation.

2024 Serial Wildland Arson Investigation TrainingThe 11th annual training is now in the books. This year was one of the highest rated training packages we have put together with tons of great feedback, and several experts already asking to present next year. The attached photos show a strong representation from our colleagues in Western Canada, and some of our other speakers. To make them feel at home we brought in a major snowstorm. Plus, we had 85 other attendees from a dozen U.S. states from the local, state, and federal LE and firefighting agencies. Each year we change the program, the speakers and the main topic. If you are interested in high quality training from arson investigation professionals who are currently working in the biz, then look at the swaitreno.com website. Sign up for free and download the free newsletter that has updates, case histories, and any news related to Arson, Wildfire, and Serial Arson investigations.

One month away from the Serial and Wildland Arson Investigation Training (SWAIT) in Reno. Not all serial arsonists are alike. This year the instructors will be presenting several case histories of various serial arsonists, including wildland arsonists, firefighter serial arsonists, the science of tracking serial arsonists through geo-spatial analysis, and this unique case of a female serial arsonist named Priscilla.Priscilla fits in an odd category called the "mommy arsonists". She was linked to more than 40 fires in four different jurisdictions over a ten-year period. She had a personal connection to each victim. Photos of some of her fire scenes are attached. She was chased down and finally prosecuted by the relentless work of Inv. Justin Buckingham, who will present this difficult case in February at the SWAIT training. Click on the flyer for details and sign up for the free newsletter which has updates, news, and case histories. See you there. Ed

Practical Arson Investigation Training:Hey Arson Investigators...Do you want to take some training from experts who actually go to criminal court? This is the second announcement for the annual Serial and Wildland Arson Investigation Training in Reno, in Feb. 2024.Among other experts, two award winning arson prosecutors will present the Justin Caruso Serial Arson case...this case spanned several years and three states, with the suspect being suspected of more that a dozen staged arson fires, many of which fooled engineers and certified fire investigators. In the midst of his spree of fire, Caruso even received a "Lifesaving" award for rescuing one of his arson victims. One of Caruso's last staged fires killed an elderly neighbor. Come to Reno to talk to multiple experts who worked this incredibly complex arson case. See the attached flyer for the website and newsletter. Sign up soon, hotels are selling out quickly.
